Tararua Huts
Waiopehu Hut
The planning is all over and the new hut is complete. Our thanks go out to all the contractors and suppliers who have helped in making our dream a reality.
The contract for building the hut was awarded to local builder and outdoor enthusiast, Rod Feasey, who has made a splendid job of this hut and has completed it within the time frame required.
For a taste of the views and cosy accommodation, take time to view the following photos.
Imagine
the logistics in getting a hut built in the Tararuas. The site once cleared
needed a small digger fitted with a drilling rig to drill the foundation piles
holes, which was followed by 22 tonnes of ready mix concrete. This is just
so the hut will not shift in that infamous Tararua weather.
Being located at the bushline at just over 900 metres the hut had to be designed
to handle winds of up to 320kph. Keep in mind a hurricanes wind classifies
itself at a mere 118kph.
Twenty-two thousand nails and numerous chopper flights later the hut is completed.
A real testament of good design and liaison between our club members and the
Dep. of Conservation.
Our thanks go out to DOC staff member, Wayne Boness, who has ensured things have gone reasonably smoothly.
Unfortunately
South Ohau Hut is now a thing of the past. Due to severe land subsidence at
the rear of the hut the hut had to be removed in the interest of safety.
Plans are under way to find a suitable site close by, but in the immediate
future the area is only suited to camping at.
Should
you wish to make a donation for the replacement of this key character hut
please post them to our club secretary at PO Box 479, Levin.

Please ensure that whenever you're using a backcountry hut that you obtain a hut ticket prior to your trip.
These can be purchased from DOC or any retailer displaying the backcountry huts logo
Alternatively you could purchase an annual pass
